Creation of a Repository of Internet of Things (IoT) Devices

Call for Proposal

About TIH Foundation for IoT & IoE (TIH-IoT)

TIH Foundation for IoT & IoE (TIH-IoT) has been set up as a Section-8 company (not-for-profit) by IIT Bombay under the National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber-Physical Systems (NM-ICPS), being implemented by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India. Technology Innovation Hub for IoT & IoE (TIH-IoT) at IIT Bombay is focusing on creating a self-sustaining innovation continuum by fostering translational research for technology & product development, building highly knowledgeable human resources, and a vibrant start-up ecosystem, in the technology vertical of the Internet of Things (IoT). The goal is to help India become a pioneer in technology-led economic growth and prepare the country to be the world leader in the technology arena.

In order to foster R&D and address challenging problems along with identified gaps in the domain of IoT and IoE, the technology development of TIH-IoT seeks proposals on application-oriented technologies.
Proposals are invited from individuals or in collaboration with researchers (faculty, scientist, researcher of academic institutes/research labs, industry, Startups, etc.) for the execution of projects defined in the following technologies. Startups are encouraged to take up the projects. Multiple projects on each stated problem may be awarded based on the variety in solution approach and/or use-case.

A. Creation of a Repository of Internet of Things (IoT) Devices

The project focuses on the development of a unique repository catering to the entire IoT domain. Although a number of repositories exist worldwide, say for example the PROMISE Software Engineering Repository with the University of Ottawa and the UCI Machine Learning Repository, they are focused on the maintenance of databases and tools to aid in the development of software predictive models and machine learning algorithms. There are others like the VarIoT (Vulnerability and Attack Repository for IoT) created as part of the EU project funded by the Innovation and Networks Executive Agency (INEA)’s CEF Telecom program. It basically focuses on the creation of a service that will provide actionable information regarding IoT, which can be used to ensure the cybersecurity of IoT devices and the whole Internet, and enhanced data collection to facilitate the same.

On the other hand, the envisioned repository as part of the proposal aims at the creation of an extensive database to facilitate the various services in the IoT domain. In the proposed repository, various kinds of information about each IoT device deployed in the country will be stored. Examples of such information include the acquirer’s name, location, and serial number, hardware, software, and firmware installed in the device and their version, types of sensors attached to the device, communication protocols used, memory, what kinds of personal information about customers is being collected by the IoT device, etc. Also, each IoT device may need to be registered with this repository before it is deployed in the country.

The envisioned repository and registration process have significant potential in various areas of national importance including security, privacy, law enforcement, combating crime and terrorism, analysis of the data stored in the repository and use of the insights gained to aid in policy making and planning etc.

The specific technology fall-outs from the project will be as follows.

  • An efficient, scalable, and secure IoT device repository will be developed
  • A speedy, secure, and effective process of registration of IoT devices will be specified.
  • User-friendly interfaces will be made available using which the repository can be accessed and used for various applications including those listed above.

Under the main project of IoT Repository following sub-projects have been formulated.
